What makes a Midwife Different?

The Midwives Model of  Care is based on the fact that pregnancy and birth are normal life processes.

The Midwives Model of Care includes:
  • Monitoring the physical, psychological, and social well-being of the mother throughout the childbearing cycle
  • Providing the mother with individualized education, counseling, and prenatal care, continuous hands-on assistance during labor and delivery, and postpartum support
  • Minimizing technological interventions
  • Identifying and referring women who require obstetrical attention
The application of this woman-centered model of care has been proven to reduce the incidence of birth injury, trauma, and cesarean section.

Countless studies have shown that healthy, low-risk women, birthing at home with a qualified midwife experience fewer interventions, fewer cesarean sections, lower maternal and infant mortality rates, and a more positive birth experience than planned hospital births.   For a comprehensive listing of some such studies, see here.

What is a Doula?

A birth doula is a trained birth assistant who provides support to a laboring woman and her partner. While she is not a medical professional, she can offer a wide range of comfort measures during labor, from massage to aromatherapy to continuous reassurance and pain coping techniques. Pronounced doo-lah and meaning "woman's servant", the word has now come to mean a woman experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the woman before, during and just after childbirth.

Women supported by a doula in labor have been shown to have:

    * 50% reduction in cesarean sections.
    * 25% shorter labor.
    * 60% reduction in epidural requests.
    * 30% reduction in analgesia use.
    * 40% reduction in forceps use

Complete Beginnings Childbirth Classes

Class 1: Why natural childbirth? ,Nutrition and Exercise

Class 2: Pregnancy, Belly mapping, and Stages of Labor

Class 3: Choosing your care provider, Birth Choices, and Doulas

Class 4:  Hospital setting, Interventions, Unexpected situations and your Birth plan

Class 5: Conquering Birth Fears, Relaxation, Coaching and Coping techniques-co-taught by my husband

Class 6: Postpartum period, Breastfeeding, Newborn care, and Baby wearing

It is not a traditional classroom setting.  It's a comfortable discussion between expectant parents and an experienced childbirth professional on specific topics.  Group size is usually small so there is time to address individual situations and concerns.

Course content focuses on understanding childbirth issues and the benefits and risks of interventions and the importance of choosing the right care provider for you.  We will discuss the process of birth as well as how our current societal traditions and expectations affect birth to help you in your decision-making process.  Labor coping techniques will be taught in a down-to-earth hands-on manner incorporating many tried and true methods.  Each class will cover nutrition, relaxation and coaching practice and the majority of time a birth video.

"Financial Aid" and scholarships available for those who qualify, and trades will be considered.  Please contact me if money is an issue, as I strongly believe that every woman deserves the support she desires.
